Assembly

Description:

This training aims at giving you the theoretical knowledge on wood and its derivatives, as well as the basic tools to follow our training on woodworking. We gather the necessary theoretical knowledge to allow you evolving in autonomy on the approach of the material, the purchase of wood and the basic notions to know for woodworking.

Planning:

•Wood anatomy: macroscopic study of wood / physical properties and influencing factors / mechanical properties.
• Wood harvesting and cutting / drying and storage of wood / purchasing information (certifications / label / suppliers / commercial dimensions and wood classes).
• Identification of anomalies, defects, wood pests and treatments.
• Wood selection and cutting process.
• Identification of common European wood species.
• Structure and use of wood derivatives.

Description:

This course is an extension of the wood knowledge course and is intended for beginner in woodworking. Together, we will learn the steps and methods for making straight cuts with a handsaw, taking and reporting dimensions accurately, marking out wood pieces (tools and methods) and using basic woodworking tools (plane – chisel – scraper – sandpaper). Initiated people can also follow this course to dust off or update their knowledge.

Planning:

• Lexicon and basic woodworking techniques (working with a square, taking dimensions, tips & tricks …)
• Cutting with a saw (square cut).
• Notions about maintenance and care of tools, in complete safety.
• Making a ground surface with a chisel.
• Making a ground surface with a hand plane.
• Making a molding by hand.
• Use and study of scraper shapes.
• Abrasives: Composition, characteristics and packaging.

Description:

Quick and easy to execute, these assemblies and their variations will allow you to get a foot into the world of woodworking and assemblies. This training will allow you approaching the diverse hand tools and techniques of wood cutting. At the end of this course, you will be able to make these assemblies in autonomy for your own projects.

Planning:

• Study of the different assembly variants and their application.
• Tracing methods and execution of assemblies.
• Manufacture of a puzzle game in solid wood with hand tools.
• Manufacture of crosslap joint and bridle joint.

Description:

Mortise and tenon joints are available in different variants depending on the use, the aesthetics and/or the constraints of the manufacturing project. This course will cover the usefulness of this assembly and the terminology, as well as the methods of execution, by making several joints by hand. We will approach the different keys necessary to the manufacture of a solid assembly of high quality.

Planning:

• Study of the different assembly variants and their application.
• Tracing methods and execution of assemblies.
• Handcrafting of diverse type of mortise and tenon joints
• Fabrication of a solid wood work object.

Description:

Dovetail and box joint are among the most modern traditional joints. This type of joints originates from the need to make the joint self-locking, to join thin layers of wood, and in the search for mechanical strength. Through this course, you will discover and make these different types of joints by building a small box. At the end of this course, you will have the keys in hand to progress independently on the manufacture of these assemblies in more complex projects.

Planning:

• Manufacture of a box joint by hand
• Manufacture of a dovetail of carpenter and cabinet-maker by hand
• Manufacture of a half-blind dovetail joint by hand
• Tracing and distribution of the tails in the traditional way
• Manufacture of assemblies with hand tools only

Description:

From our courses on assemblies or from your own experience, you may have noticed that the constraints imposed by your project determine which assembly to use. This course will address the fabrication of more difficult assemblies used in atypical situations, for aesthetic purposes or simply for technical challenges.

Planning:

• List of special assemblies and their applications
• Types of assemblies covered:
├ Splayed indent joint
├ Splayed scarf joint
├ « Assemblage à enture à faux tenon avec butée »
└ « Assemblage à entures à queue-d’aronde »

Training methodology:

Interactive teaching: Interactive teaching allows teaching by actively involving trainees in the learning processes through regular instructor/learner and learner/learner interactions. This method focuses on the understanding and meaning of the course content as opposed to merely memorizing them by rote. Learners are constantly encouraged to be active participants.

Experiential learning: Experiential learning is a learning approach through experience, which directly places learners in situations that reflect reality. This approach is based on the learning process rather than on the results (concrete experimentation, reflective observation). The instructor adapts to the learner’s level. The learner will make the group progress by being actively involved in the training and by sharing experiences. This training approach aims to promote the development of learners’ autonomy.

Project-based training: The learner produces his own work project at his own pace, independently. The instructor is present to accompany the learner when he/she encounters difficulties and provides support, advice or suggestions for experimentation to move forward in the project. The goal is to equip the learner with methods, techniques and knowledge so that he/she can accurately analyze and evaluate the production process of his/her project and solve problems with flexibility.
