We gather the necessary theoretical knowledge to allow you evolving in autonomy on the approach of the material, the purchase of wood and the basic notions to know for woodworking.

Planning:

•Wood anatomy: macroscopic study of wood / physical properties and influencing factors / mechanical properties.
• Wood harvesting and cutting / drying and storage of wood / purchasing information (certifications / label / suppliers / commercial dimensions and wood classes).
• Identification of anomalies, defects, wood pests and treatments.
• Wood selection and cutting process.
• Identification of common European wood species.
• Structure and use of wood derivatives.

Infrastructure:

Water – Dishes / Equipped kitchen – Toilets – Parking places with disc for max 1h along the road of the pavement & max 3h at the Sauvabelin Lake (5min on foot). Collective parking of the signal at 15min walking distance (disc & paying).

Description:

This training is a continuation of our basic training course. You will perfect your wood carving technique by creating a high-relief jewelry box in lime wood. We will study the creation of volume from drawings and/or models with a practical application on a solid wood piece. We work with new techniques and tools (sculptor’s scrapers, pocket-eyes, sandblasters…) to accentuate the volumes and perfect your sculptures. Our training aims at developing your learning autonomy to allow you practicing and progressing by yourself.

Planning:

• Fabrication of a jewelry box with a scallop shell shape.
• Texturing and finishing techniques.
• Techniques for hollowing out the wood and setting up the volume.
• Isostatic positioning (clamping) of the pieces to be carved.

Training methodology:

Interactive teaching: Interactive teaching allows teaching by actively involving trainees in the learning processes through regular instructor/learner and learner/learner interactions. This method focuses on the understanding and meaning of the course content as opposed to merely memorizing them by rote. Learners are constantly encouraged to be active participants.

Experiential learning: Experiential learning is a learning approach through experience, which directly places learners in situations that reflect reality. This approach is based on the learning process rather than on the results (concrete experimentation, reflective observation). The instructor adapts to the learner’s level. The learner will make the group progress by being actively involved in the training and by sharing experiences. This training approach aims to promote the development of learners’ autonomy.

Project-based training: The learner produces his own work project at his own pace, independently. The instructor is present to accompany the learner when he/she encounters difficulties and provides support, advice or suggestions for experimentation to move forward in the project. The goal is to equip the learner with methods, techniques and knowledge so that he/she can accurately analyze and evaluate the production process of his/her project and solve problems with flexibility.
